Do you hear the people sing (along)

This summer, The Old Joint Stock Theatre presents an electrifying, feel-good musical concert packed with the biggest showstoppers and crowd-pleasers we all know and love. Usually, we’re told not to sing along in the theatre (and for good reason…), but this time, it’s your turn to shine!

For one special show, you can let it go, defy gravity, and dance through life without fear of an usher's dreaded flashlight stopping the fun. Expect phenomenal vocals, dazzling choreography, and maybe even a sing-off or two—so warm up those vocal cords and get ready for a jazz-handed jamboree!

Following the sell-out success of I Screamed a Scream: A Villains Cabaret and A Little Bawl of Pain: Musical Tearjerkers, this brand-new concert promises to be the ultimate night out for musical lovers of all ages. Gather your friends, bring the family, and get ready for a night of pure stagey joy. Disclaimer: You are 100% guaranteed to have "the time(warp) of your life!"

Second Summer of Love

SECOND SUMMER OF LOVE is an uplifting, high-energy, physical-theatre comedy.

Original raver, Louise, wonders how she went from ecstasy-taking idealist to respectable, disillusioned, suburban mum…? Written and performed by Emmy Happisburgh, the play premiered as a one-woman performance at Edinburgh Fringe 2022. Now, with direction by Scott Le Crass, this refreshed version is a three hander. On the present evening we meet MOLLY (played by Rosa Strudwick; Emmy’s real-life daughter) and BRIAN (Christopher Freestone) as, triggered by her daughter’s anti-drugs homework and at peak mid-life crisis, LOUISE flashes back to the emotional happenings of the week and then further to the early 90’s rave scene.

This play addresses the universal themes of coming of age and fulfilling potential whilst offering a new perspective for conversations about recreational drug use and embracing mid-life.

“some memories around Sterns nightclub in Worthing (which Carl Cox once called “100% equivalent to the Hacienda”) wove themselves into this play, Second Summer of Love. It is not a ‘true story’ but it is inspired by real life events and real people from when I was luckily, and very accidentally, right in the middle of the rave zeitgeist. It’s not a tale I’ve seen authentically told in theatres; especially not by a mid-life woman. I am grateful to bring the “one love” message of the original rave movement to the stage. I’m excited to play several different characters using the physical skills of Le Coq again and genuinely overjoyed to be in scenes opposite the other two actors.” Emmy Happisburgh

Scott says, "I'm excited to direct Second Summer as it's a fresh voice. It's a perspective which I've never seen on stage. Older female voices are something we need to champion more and in a way which is strong, dynamic and playful. This play embodies that."

The majority of SECOND SUMMER OF LOVE uses just an empty space with only one, prop-free actor (except for a bucket hat and a couple of glow-sticks). One performer pulls an audience into a whole world that they have created single-handedly.

Night in the Canyon

This homage to the golden age of American(a) music, 'A Night In The Canyon' features the timeless songs of James Taylor, Carole King, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Buffalo Springfield, Eagles, Joni Mitchell and more.

If that's not enough, the show will be performed by an unrivalled trio of noted high calibre artists in their own right. Namely Robbie Cavanagh (Winner of the Whispering Bob Harris Emerging Artist Award), Eddy Smith about to headline, in his own right, the famous 'Jazz Cafe' (where the likes of Bobby Womack, Chaka Khan and many more household names), and Jana Varga(Emerging Artist nominee, UK Blues and Roots) who is now in the band of (triple platinum and double Brit nominee) Rumer and Jana will also be opening for Rumer at a now sold out gig at the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Hall. So, not a show by your average, workmanlike, musicians!

As such, this is not a tribute show in the traditional sense of the word, but more the artists themselves performing their own takes, both individually and collectively, on these timeless classics of the late 60s/early 70s American songbook, together with an award winning song of two of their own, inspired by this legendary period of celebrated music.

It's a Wonderful Knife

About the Show

Inspired by the single most-viewed Christmas Day film of all time in the UK — Crocodile Dundee (yes, you read that correctly) — and the Christmas classic It’s a Wonderful Life, The Old Joint Stock is going down under this December! Strap in, Sheila's, for the most Christmassy musical no one ever knew they needed this festive season.

It’s Christmas Eve, and Hollywood star Paul Hogan is feeling old and forgotten — the day after his old screen companion, Burt the crocodile, passed away at the ripe old age of 90. On the brink, Paul wonders if life would have been better if he’d never been born. Meanwhile, Burt is sent back down to Earth to save Paul and show him the positive impact his life has had on the world — so that Burt, in turn, can earn his wings.

Expect big songs, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Hugh Jackman, and a tap-dancing croc… wearing Crocs. What more could you want to get into the Christmas spirit?

DANGER: This show may cause you to shed a crocodile tear or two…

Artistic Director of the Old Joint Stock James Edge Comments:

“After two years of producing UK Premiers of fantastic lesser known contemporary shows and expanding to well known cult favourites, the Old Joint Stock is extremely excited to now be producing two brand new musicals this Christmas, with our first announcement being ‘It’s a Wonderful Knife - Christmas Dundee’. There’s always been the fun dialogue about whether Die hard was a christmas film, well when Crocodile Dundee was released on the BBC christmas day 1989 it was viewed by 21.8 million people making it the single most viewed Christmas day film in the United Kingdom. So how did we tie this in and make it into a Christmas show? You’ll have to buy a ticket and find out.”
